Your mind is a room, your mind is where you spend most of your life, your mind is your inner world, your mind is the secret room, your mind is where you come back every time others leave you, every time you are alone. When you sit on the toilet, when you chew a breakfast sandwich, when you have a long drive, when you’re falling asleep.
Your thoughts build you up and your thoughts take you down.
When you start your life your mind is clean, the room is empty, the walls are white. Now you’re twenty-five, or thirty-three, or fifty-nine, what does your mind’s room look like? Is it at room with lots of light, clean, creatively designed? Is it a ghetto apartment, few holes here and there, worn carpet, a single bed, a few cigarette butts on the floor? Do you have rats in your room; do the rats crawl over you when you sleep? Do you have a cat? A tiger? Several elephants?
Do you look forward to being alone or do you fear it? What would happen if you went on a two-week vacation alone on a beautiful island? Would you look forward to that? Or would you dread being alone?
Whatever you say, create, share; whatever comes out of you – the material for that outcome was brought into your mind at some point, then you processed it, added your personality to it. What you bring into your room, the secret room, your mind, will eventually come out.
What comes out of you?
Do people want to hang out with you? Do they want you to speak? Do they like your ideas? Do you uplift people? What kind of air is about you? Are you dark inside? Or are you a light to this world? Does anyone enjoy looking into your eyes?
Do YOU like what comes out of you? Your words, are they of encouraging nature, or do they destroy people? Is every fourth word that comes out of your mouth profane?
You have lived eighteen, twenty-seven, thirty-five, forty-two years and your mind is in a state that it is in, you cannot change the past, your life is what it is now – but you can change how you will be in one hour, how you will be tomorrow, how the rest of your life will be.
Do you want to change what is in your mind and what comes out of you?
If your answer is yes, here are a few steps to get started, and then you will need to maintain your room, just like you would your house, or apartment, or a dorm room.
First – clean. Get rid of everything that is non-essential for a plain life, leave only what is necessary for you to breathe in and out, if possible paint the walls white again.
Second – selectively start bringing things into your room. Let things in only after careful consideration. Do you need to see that movie? Will that webpage benefit your inner world? Is that the book you should read? Is this a friend that you need? Is that a game you should play? Was it a good idea to accept that thought?
Third – enjoy. Enjoy the small things. Enjoy sun. Enjoy friends. Enjoy parents. Enjoy today, don’t live for tomorrow; plan for tomorrow, but don’t live for tomorrow. Enjoy life. Enjoy God.
Fourth – (which should be first), discover God.
